‘Place de la Gare’ at Solar Uniquartier

Details

‘La Place de la Gare’ was first designed to make it a vibrant and dynamic place to accommodate thousands of people that converge to take the REM, or to enter the new Solar Uniquartier district. By creating a new entrance to the city, Brossard wants to create an attractive gathering place that is a destination in itself and that allows citizens, workers and visitors to relax and enjoy  themselves. The main design challenges were to provide facilities and establish a program that is flexible enough to host events, but which that is also friendly and human-scaled.

A number of components have been designed to achieve these goals. In order to integrate the design with the neighbourhood, the public space will be the starting point for a signature trail that will run through the neighbourhood. Using the original concept of origami, the design of the space is inspired by a large unfolded sheet crossing through the neighbourhood that connects three main public spaces. The various layouts and design details give an intimate scale to the user and passers-by. For example, recessed jets of water and a starry sky canopy animate the center of the public space, while all around, green lawns lined with trees create a green setting. Kiosks and spaces surrounding the space will help animate the space during events.

The site will accommodate 2,500 to 5,000 people and will be able to host a diverse range of events. In order to support these events, an elegant architectural structure will house a permanent platform at the entrance to the place and a technical gutter along the place will accommodate the different equipment required. Everything has been designed to make it a great place for shows, film screenings, and street entertainment, which will solidify it as a major cultural hub on the South Shore.
